What We Do

Exterior work from the roof down

Some homeowners know exactly what they need. Others just know that something is leaking, rotting, overflowing or starting to look worn out. These are the exterior systems we work on.

Roofing

Roof replacement, repairs, residential roofing, commercial roofing, metal roofing, leak work and maintenance.

Siding

Siding replacement and exterior wall work using fiber cement, engineered wood, cedar, vinyl and other siding options.

Gutters & Downspouts

Gutter and drainage work designed to move roof runoff away from fascia, siding and the foundation.

Decks

Deck repair, replacement and exterior deck work, including the connections where decks meet the house.

Windows

Replacement windows and exterior detailing around window openings, flashing and siding.

Skylights

Skylight installation, replacement and exterior flashing work, including skylights incorporated into reroof projects.

Roof Maintenance

Roof inspections, moss and debris concerns, gutter clearing and smaller issues that can shorten the life of a roof.

Trim, Fascia & Soffit

Exterior components around roof edges and wall transitions that often show water damage before the larger system does.

Exterior Inspections

Help identifying where water is coming from and which exterior system actually needs attention.

Not sure which service you need?

That is normal. Tell us what you are seeing and we can start with the problem instead of making you diagnose the house yourself.

One Exterior System

Your roof, siding, windows and gutters do not work independently

Water moves from one exterior surface to the next. Roof runoff reaches gutters. Roof flashing meets siding. Window flashing ties into the wall. Decks attach through the exterior. When one of those transitions is wrong, the visible damage may show up somewhere completely different.

This is where having a contractor that works across multiple exterior systems becomes useful. We can look at how the pieces connect instead of automatically assuming the first visible symptom is the real cause.

Roof to Wall Roof flashing and siding need to overlap and drain correctly where roof surfaces terminate against exterior walls.
Windows to Siding Window openings need to work with the wall's flashing and water management, not just the trim visible from outside.
Roof to Gutters A roof can shed water correctly and still create problems if gutters and downspouts cannot move that water away.
Decks to Walls Deck connections can create vulnerable areas where framing, siding and flashing all meet.
Start With What You See

You do not need to know which trade to call first

Most exterior problems first show up as a symptom. Water stains, overflow, soft wood, moss or damaged siding tell us where to start looking, but they do not always tell us where the problem began.

There is a water stain on my ceiling

The source could be roofing, flashing, a skylight, a plumbing penetration or even moisture inside the attic. Water can travel before it becomes visible, so the stain itself does not always identify the entry point.

My gutters overflow when it rains

Debris, blocked downspouts, poor drainage or a gutter layout that is not keeping up with the roof area can all contribute. The first step is finding where the water stops moving correctly.

My siding is swelling or getting soft

That can point to repeated moisture exposure, especially around lower edges, windows, roof intersections and deck connections. The condition underneath the siding matters as much as the surface damage.

My deck has soft or rotting areas

Rot can come from age, trapped moisture, drainage problems or water entering around connections to the house. The damaged area and the attachment points should both be evaluated.

My skylight is leaking

A leak around a skylight can involve the skylight itself, flashing, surrounding roofing or condensation. It is worth identifying the actual source before deciding whether the skylight needs replacement.

When Projects Overlap

The order of the work can matter

If you are only replacing a roof or only replacing gutters, the project can usually stand on its own. When roofing, windows, siding and gutters are all part of the same exterior project, planning the sequence helps the flashing and water management fit together cleanly.

Roof & flashing

Roof-to-wall flashing and other transitions should be considered before finished wall materials lock those details in place.

Windows & wall openings

If windows are part of the project, coordinating them with siding work can make it easier to integrate the opening with the wall system.

Siding & exterior trim

Once the wall details are established, siding and trim can be installed around those transitions.

Gutters & drainage

Gutters and downspouts finish the water path by collecting roof runoff and moving it away from the structure.

Real Exterior Problems

Different symptoms, different systems

Exterior work is rarely just about how something looks. The goal is to figure out what is happening, deal with the cause and put the exterior back together correctly.

Why Topside

One company that understands more than one part of the exterior

Topside has been working on Northwest Washington homes for more than three decades. Roofing and siding are the foundation of the company, but many real exterior problems involve gutters, windows, decks, skylights and flashing at the same time.

35+ years of exterior work Experience on local homes matters because Northwest Washington moisture, moss, tree cover and weather expose weak exterior details quickly.
Roofing + siding experience Many leaks and moisture problems happen where roofs and walls meet, which is why understanding both systems is useful.
We look for the cause A ceiling stain, rotten fascia or damaged siding is a symptom. The goal is to understand what created it before deciding what needs replacement.
GAF Master Elite Qualifying GAF roofing systems may be eligible for enhanced manufacturer warranty options, including Golden Pledge.
Clear project scope If more than one exterior system is involved, the project should be planned as a whole instead of discovering conflicts halfway through the work.
Local service Topside is based in Bellingham and works throughout Northwest Washington.

Have more than one exterior project?

Tell us the whole list. Even if you do not do everything at once, knowing the long-term plan can help keep one project from creating problems for the next.

Small Details Can Become Big Problems

Openings and transitions deserve extra attention

Skylights, windows, chimneys, roof-to-wall intersections, deck ledgers and other penetrations interrupt the normal water path around a home.

That does not mean they are automatically problems. It means the flashing and surrounding exterior materials have to work together correctly.

When we are already replacing roofing or siding, it is worth looking closely at those areas while they are accessible.

Questions

Exterior project questions homeowners ask us

Do I need to know which service I need before contacting Topside?

No. Tell us what you are seeing, such as a leak, stain, moss, rotting wood, damaged siding or overflowing gutters. We can start with the symptom and help determine which exterior system needs attention.

Can Topside handle more than one exterior project at a time?

Yes. Topside works on roofing, siding, gutters, decks, windows and skylights. When multiple scopes overlap, planning them together can help the flashing, drainage and exterior transitions fit together correctly.

Do I have to complete every exterior project at once?

No. Sometimes it makes sense to phase work over time. If you know that another exterior project is coming later, tell us so the current work can be planned with the future project in mind.

What should I do if I have a ceiling water stain?

A ceiling stain can come from several sources, including roofing, flashing, skylights or other moisture issues. Water can travel before it becomes visible, so the entry point should be identified before assuming which component needs replacement.

Should windows be replaced while siding is being replaced?

If the windows are already due for replacement, coordinating the two projects can make sense because the wall is already being opened and the window flashing can be integrated with the surrounding exterior. If the windows are in good condition, there may be no reason to replace them.

Can Topside help with moss and roof maintenance?

Yes. Roof maintenance can include looking at moss, debris, gutters and smaller issues that may shorten the life of the roofing system.

Do you provide exterior services outside Bellingham?

Yes. Topside serves Northwest Washington, including Whatcom, Skagit, Island and San Juan Counties.

Do you provide free estimates?

Yes. Call (360) 752-2220 or use the estimate form to tell us about the property and the project.

Not sure where your exterior project starts?

Tell us what you are seeing and what you want to accomplish. We can help determine which parts of the exterior need attention and what the right next step looks like.
