GAF Timberline HDZ Shingles in Northwest Washington
Timberline HDZ is a dimensional architectural asphalt shingle with a wide range of colors and GAF roofing-system options for Northwest Washington homes.
Topside Roofing & Siding is a GAF Master Elite contractor. We install GAF roofing systems across Whatcom, Skagit, Island and San Juan Counties and can help homeowners compare colors, roofing details and warranty options before choosing a roof.
What makes Timberline HDZ different?
Timberline HDZ is an architectural asphalt shingle. Instead of the flatter appearance associated with traditional three-tab shingles, laminated construction and shadow lines give the roof more depth and dimension.
The product also includes installation technology intended to make proper fastening more repeatable across a roof.
LayerLock Technology
Timberline HDZ uses GAF's LayerLock technology to help mechanically secure the shingle layers together.
StrikeZone Nailing Area
A defined fastening area gives installers a larger target for proper nail placement across the roof.
Dimensional Appearance
Shadow lines and layered construction create the textured architectural look homeowners typically expect from a modern asphalt roof.
Choosing shingles for a new roof?
We can show you the available options and help compare Timberline HDZ with other roofing systems that fit your home.
How the roofing system matters in our climate
Around Bellingham and Northwest Washington, roofs spend a lot of time dealing with moisture, shade, biological growth and seasonal wind. The shingle matters, but the roof beneath and around it matters too.
Algae & Moss
Selected Timberline HDZ products include GAF's StainGuard Plus algae protection. Moss is a separate maintenance issue and can still develop on shaded roofs.
Wind
Proper fastening, roof edges and accessories matter when a roof sees strong wind. Qualifying Timberline HDZ systems may be eligible for GAF's WindProven warranty under current GAF requirements.
Long Wet Periods
Underlayment, flashing, drainage and attic ventilation remain important because even a premium shingle is only one part of the roof assembly.
See the color on a full roof, not just a tiny swatch
Shingle colors can look very different once they cover an entire roof. Siding color, trim, surrounding trees and Northwest Washington's softer light can all change how a roof reads from the street.
Here are several Timberline HDZ colors to compare. Color availability can vary by region and current GAF distribution.
Do not choose from a computer screen alone. Image brightness, display settings and surrounding materials can change how the color looks. Ask to see physical samples before making the final choice.
A Timberline HDZ roof is still a complete roofing system
The shingles are the visible layer, but roof performance depends on what happens beneath them and at every transition.
Warranty eligibility depends on the roofing system
GAF offers several warranty levels, and eligibility depends on the products installed, contractor certification and the current warranty requirements.
Timberline HDZ Coverage
Timberline HDZ carries GAF manufacturer warranty coverage subject to GAF's terms, property eligibility and products installed.
WindProven
Qualifying Timberline HDZ roofing systems may be eligible for GAF's WindProven Limited Wind Warranty when current system requirements are met.
Golden Pledge
As a GAF Master Elite contractor, Topside can offer the Golden Pledge Limited Warranty on qualifying GAF roofing systems.
Which warranty should you choose?
We can explain the options that apply to your roof and what products or system components are required for eligibility.
The shingle is only one part of the price
Two homes using the same Timberline HDZ shingle can have very different roof replacement costs. Roof geometry, tear-off, decking and the rest of the roofing system often matter more than the color selected.
A good shingle still has to fit the roof
Timberline HDZ works well on many conventional pitched residential roofs, but the roof design and property conditions should still drive the recommendation.
Conventional Pitched Roofs
Architectural asphalt shingles are a natural fit for many typical residential roof designs.
Very Shaded Properties
Heavy tree cover and persistent moss pressure may be reasons to compare other materials or plan for more roof maintenance.
Low-Slope Sections
Some roof sections may require a different roofing system rather than forcing shingles onto a slope where they are not appropriate.

Common questions about GAF Timberline HDZ
What is GAF Timberline HDZ?
Timberline HDZ is an architectural asphalt shingle from GAF. It uses layered construction for a dimensional appearance and includes GAF's LayerLock and StrikeZone fastening technology.
What colors does Timberline HDZ come in?
GAF offers a broad range of Timberline HDZ colors. Common options include Weathered Wood, Charcoal, Pewter Gray, Barkwood, Shakewood, Hickory, Slate, Mission Brown and Hunter Green, with additional colors available in some regions. Availability should be confirmed when you select the roof.
Does Timberline HDZ resist algae?
Selected Timberline HDZ products sold with the StainGuard Plus designation include GAF algae-protection warranty coverage under GAF's current terms. Algae protection should not be confused with moss prevention.
Does Timberline HDZ have a wind warranty?
Qualifying Timberline HDZ systems may be eligible for GAF's WindProven Limited Wind Warranty when the required qualifying GAF accessories and installation requirements are met. We can confirm the current terms for your proposed roof.
What is the Golden Pledge warranty?
Golden Pledge is one of GAF's enhanced roofing-system warranty options. As a GAF Master Elite contractor, Topside can offer Golden Pledge coverage on qualifying roofing systems, subject to GAF's eligibility requirements, coverage terms and restrictions.
Should I choose a roof color from pictures online?
Online images are useful for narrowing down choices, but screens do not reproduce roofing colors perfectly. It is better to compare physical samples outdoors before making the final selection.
Is Timberline HDZ better than metal roofing?
They solve different needs. Timberline HDZ is an architectural asphalt shingle with a lower initial project cost than many metal systems. Metal may be worth comparing on properties where long-term ownership, exposure or heavy moss pressure changes the priorities.
Can Timberline HDZ be installed over my existing shingles?
Whether an overlay is possible depends on the existing roof and applicable requirements. A tear-off also gives access to inspect the condition of the roof deck before installing the new roofing system.
Do you provide free Timberline HDZ estimates?
Yes. Call Topside at (360) 752-2220 or send us your project information through the estimate form.
